Meeting with Harriett Baldwin & George Lord

Today's meeting with Harriett Baldwin, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for West Worcestershire and Cllr George Lord, leader of Worcestershire County Council did not go totally according to plan.

A small but select group of Civic Society members braved sub-zero temperatures to meet with Dr Lord to reinforce their opposition to the WCC sponsored development.

The good news was that following an earlier meeting with Tenbury Mayor, Bob Martin and Harriet Baldwin, Dr Lord had agreed to visit an alternate site. The bad news was that due to his schedule he had left before the alloted start time of the meeting with the Civic Society Members.

Dr Dick van Steenis talks about potential health issues

Dr Dick van Steenis gave a very interesting and informative talk about the health effects of the emissions from incinerators.

His particular interest are the small particles called PM2.5, which are not regulated in the UK, but can be inhaled deep into the lungs.

The range of illnesses caused by inhaling PM2.5 particulates from waste burning include

Birth defects—terminations, live defects, miscarriages.

Premature deaths of babies, infants and adults

T-lymphocyte diversion to lungs with depletion causes SIDS, cot deaths, autism, MS, GBS

Attention deficit and other behaviour problems.

Lower IQ & educational achievement down 2 years, worse GCSE grades

Asthma, COPD, viral & bacterial respiratory & other infections (especially boys)

Coronary heart disease, heart attacks, arteriosclerosis, strokes, SADS.

Diabetes type 2, sometimes type 1 ---note trebling under current government

Multiple chemical sensitivity with allergies & arthritis

ME, CFS, Hypothyroidism with low T3 level (adding to obesity)

Endometriosis and other hormone disruption.

Clinical depression & suicides, apathy, which increases the obesity problem.

CANCERS—nonHodgkins lymphoma, brain, breast, colon, lung, prostate, kidney, liver etc

The Chief Medical Officer wrote to doctors in January 2006 about the recent
trebling of gastroschisis birth defects, caused by dioxin exposure, proving that using hazardous waste fuel mixes even in alleged “state of the art” incinerators etc. is callous unsafe government policy.

Analysis of 9 health parameters in Telford by ward in 2005 revealed massive
increases in illnesses and standardised mortality rates in 7 polluted wards
compared with 24 less polluted wards.

An incinerator built in Colnbrook in 1990 caused Slough SMR to worsen from 88 to 121 by 2001 meaning 11 years lopped off lifespan.

Meeting with Bill Wiggin MP

Mr Bill Wiggin, Member of Parliament for Leominster, Shadow Minister for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs was in Tenbury today to meet local people.
At the end of a hectic and well attended surgery, he met with a delegation from the Tenbury Civic Society and Tenbury Action Group to discuss in detail the proposed Biomass Power Station.

Talk by Colin Richards

On Wed Nov 7: Colin Richards, Conservation Officer for South Shropshire District Council (which covers Burford) gave an interesting talk at the Kings Head, Cross St, Tenbury Wells.

Colin is a real 'hands' on Conservation Officer who can really educate and motivate the Property Owners, their designers and architects, and the craftsmen doing the work.

The talk was accompanied by an interesting selection of photo's, showing a wide range of subjects such as the making of bricks at Acton Scott, several 'Grand Design' projects completed locally, and the results of poor renovations carried out over the years.

Pump Rooms Open Day

The Tenbury Wells historic pump rooms were reopened on Sunday 4th November 2007 by Mayor Cllr & Mrs Bob Martin.

In his opening speech the Mayor paid tribute to the role played by the partnership between Advantage West Midlands and Malvern Hills District Council.

He went on to say that he hoped this opening ceremony would be symbolic of a new Tenbury.

Following the opening ceremony the Pump Rooms were opened to the public for tours, including areas which had not previously been available until the Malvern Hills DC office had been vacated on Friday.
